The hand is one of the most complex structures in the human body due to its intricate anatomy and balance of precision and power. The hand is comprised of a complex system of bones, joints, tendons, ligaments, muscles, nerves and blood vessels. It is easy to underestimate the great importance of our hands in our day-to-day lives. Certain acquired or congenital diseases or in some situations injury, our livelihood and ability to participate in our hobbies may be threatened.
Some issues include:
- Traumatic Injuries, including fractures, amputations or lacerations featuring nerve damage or blood vessel impact
- Congenital Deformities, present at birth, including congenital constriction band syndrome, under- or over-growth of digits, or inability of the hand to separate into distinct digits (syndactyly)
- Arthritis-Related Deformities, most often present in severe instances of osteoarthritis as well as rheumatoid arthritis, resulting in digits presenting in a deformed appearance
- Overuse Injuries, including carpal tunnel syndrome, DeQuervain’s Synovitis and trigger finger
- Infections, frequently seen in people with diabetes, as a result of poor blood circulation to their extremities.
Due to the intricate anatomy of the hand, surgery is often very delicate and relies heavily on microsurgical techniques. Microsurgical hand surgery is performed on the smallest of structures including nerves and blood vessels through the hand and fingers using specifically-designed instruments under a microscope.
During surgery, damaged areas can be repaired, even in some cases requiring reattaching severed fingers or hands. The operation may involve grafts of skin, bone, muscle or other tissues from other sites on the patient. In this situation sometimes free transfer of tissue can be performed by repairing the patient’s artery, vein and or nerves.
Microsurgery can dramatically improve the function of a hand, but in some situations it may also improve the aesthetic appearance. While rehabilitation and hand therapy may be required postoperatively, the long-term benefits are often exceptional. Contact us today to see if we can assist with your hand complaint.
